The beauty industry is bombarded with new trends promising to give us plumper, more youthful complexions, and with so many beauty buzzwords going around it’s difficult to separate the fads from those that are here to stay.

Luckily, face needling has been a constant that has been ever-evolving for more than 50 years and is quickly becoming a skincare treatment staple. While most of us have heard of “micro” and “derma” needling before, many are still confused on what differentiates the two. Being a long-time favourite for celebrities and skincare specialists everywhere; let’s take a closer look!

What’s the difference?

Also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) micro and dermal needling have been nicknamed the ‘saving grace’ for skin rejuvenation, helping to smooth skin texture and target various impurities such as enlarged pores and scarring.

While both treatments are essentially different methods of the same thing, derma-rolling uses a paint-brush-like-tool with a needled drum on end. This tool is manually rolled across the epidermis to help absorb topical serums and stimulate collagen production to strengthen the skin.

Micro-needling is a technical and professional upgrade to the traditional dermal roller. Micro-needling is performed with a handheld device that uses a disposable tip equipped with fine needles and a small motor to precisely penetrate the skin, resulting in a more consistent delivery and enhanced results when compared to derma-rolling.

Dermal roller or Micro-needling?

While derma-rolling is a great at-home substitute or mid-treatment upkeep, micro-needling provides a more advanced form of treatment and is less traumatic for your skin. The motorised pen is safe, consistent, controlled and precise, whereas dermal rollers, if misused, can open the skin up to irritation and infection on a deeper level.

One of the most significant advantages of select micro-needling devices is that they can treat areas derma-rolling has difficulties with; such as the under-eye area, upper lip, and around the nose. Using new technology, the technician can tailor the needle to precisely measure how deep it pierces the skin to suit the individual’s areas they are most concerned with.

What can you expect in an appointment?

While procedures involving needles can be daunting for some, micro-needling is a great introductory treatment to advanced skincare and is a great addition to your skincare routine. Clients can ask to have a numbing cream applied to the skin at least 20 minutes before the treatment begins to limit any uncomfortable sensations. Once in effect, the device will glide over the concentrated area and work its magic.

The process only takes 30 minutes and is perfect for those who are time-poor or looking for a lunch break fix-me-up. Redness can occur for one to two days post-treatment due to the stimulation but will heal to reveal a glowing and supple complexion.
